Beginners Care of Magical Creatures

Beginners Care of Magical Creatures

     Welcome first year students! I am pleased to announce that this year I, Professor Dean Dillian, will be your new Care of Magical Creatures instructor. This semester we will dwell upon creatures that you have thought false and mythical before. As you are bearly discovering the magical world we live on, and the one you will be prepared to live in, you will realize that there are many things believable way beyond your imagination. This class will prepare you in knowing how to deal with creatures from our magical kingdom.

-Professor Dean Dillian

*Credit for the knowledge of this class comes highly from "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" by Newt Scamander aka J.K. Rowling. She possesses the right to most of the knowledge that will be shared.*

Syllabus

Beginners Care of Magical Creatures

      The class consists of nine carefully designed classes, one per week of the term, except the fifth week and the last week . The Winter 2009 term runs from January 5, 2009 to March 20, 2009. This term consists of eleven weeks, therefore nine lessons that will be carefully and thoughtfully planned. The course will challenge you to live up to the expectations of the professor. In this course you will deal with creatures that you have never before encountered and will now have to face. The class consists of the following (MAY SEEM LIKE A LOT BUT READ DETAILS BELOW!):

  • 9 lesson plans
  • 9 Homework Assignments {Mostly planned to be just a one paragraph prompt/roleplay.}
  • 5 Roleplay Assignments
  • 1 Midterm Test and 1 Final Test
  • 1 Notebook {Graded in the Project category}
  • 1 Fun ProJect

Lesson Plans: Lesson plans will vary from Lecture Format, Textbook Format, and Roleplaying Format. Each of the lessons contains only one homework assignment. All lessons will have a thread posted on the Hogwarts Classroom Forum, as I will be asking questions throughout. (Meaning the class will go throughout the week.) Everyone in my class MUST reply, comment, or say something in the thread to receive a "HERE" mark, otherwise you will be marked "ABSENT." If you are absent on 2 out of the 9 lessons, you will not receive a quill. EXCEPTIONS ON A BASE TO BASE CASE.

Homework Assignments: Each homework assignment will consist of a one paragraph prompt or answering a question in roleplay format. A lesson begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. All homework assignments are due the first day of the next lesson, meaning every Monday. Each homework assignment will be worth from 20 to 30 points, and will be graded according to effort, accuracy, and creativity. All homework assignments MUST be PMed to me before the deadline or you WILL receive a zero.

*WORTH 15% OF FINAL GRADE

Roleplay Assignments: There will only be five of these throughout the ten lessons. These are to be completed by the end of the lesson, that is, by Sunday of every week. You will be given a small prompt in a Classroom thread and the class will have to work together to solve the "puzzle/mystery" you have been presented with. I will grade you out of 30 points based on effort, creativity, and willingness to cooperate. These will be very easy and you will have to post at least 3 times in the thread to receive a full grade. Partial grade will be given if you posted twice, a ZERO will be given if you posted only once or not a single time.

*WORTH 20% OF FINAL GRADE

Tests: There will only be 2 tests throughout the ten lessons. Tests will be handed out when we do not have a lesson. You will take the entire week to complete your test in class. Tests will be my very own roleplay labyrinths filled with all types of magical creatures that you will have to fight off of your way. Each test, in total, will be worth forty points. You will have exactly seven days to turn in an exam/finish your roleplay. I will grade according to how many creatures you are able to correctly identify and cross across from. Exams are to be handed out on a Monday, day of a lesson, and to be turned in the Sunday thereafter.

*WORTH 30% OF FINAL GRADE

Notebook: A notebook will be kept throughout the entire term. In this notebook you will include every homework assignment you need to do. ONLY add your assignment after I have PMed you the assignment back with a grade. You will post the assignment prompt, your response, my grade, and any comments I made. There will be a final check the last week of the term. You will also be including your own commentary after every lesson as I'd like to know your opinions on the class and what you are learning. The grading of your notebook will consist of creativity, completion of assignments, cover page, and the overall format that you have created for it. Graded out of 100 points in the project category.

Projects: There will only be one project throughout the entire term. You will work on it as we move along. There will be a pretty neat prompt that will require the BEST of your roleplaying skills as I will try and thwart you with many inquiries. You will have the entire term to work on it as you learn from the given lessons. The prompt will be given sometime between the first and second lessons. The project will consists of 75 points.
